A significant body of research has demonstrated that orthokeratology lenses reduce the progression of myopia in children by up to 50%. These studies have shown that children who undergo orthokeratology have a slower rate of axial elongation (an increase in the length of the eyeball) than those who wear traditional eyeglasses or daytime contact lenses. Another study conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology reviewed 25 randomized clinical trials and found that orthokeratology was effective in slowing down the progression of myopia in children and adolescents.
