What is myopia? Why should we consider myopia control?

What is myopia and why should we be concerned?

Myopia, also known as short or near sightedness, is one of the most common eye conditions that can develop easily during childhood. A myopic person can see clearly up close but struggles with further distance. Increased use of handheld electronic devices and less outdoor activities are all factors contributing to the rapid development of myopia.

So why should we worry about it?

The younger the child starts to develop myopia, the more likely they will end up with a higher level of myopia in their adulthood. Not only do people need to wear glasses for correction, but myopia also often leads to increased risk of development of other eye diseases such as retinal detachment, myopic macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataract.

So what should we do?

Fortunately, at Spex. Optometrist, we have ways (myopia control) to help slow down myopia progression! You can choose from Hoya MiyoSmart Lenses, CooperVision MiSight contact lens, Orthokeratology (Ortho -K) overnight contact lens and Low dose Atropine prescription eye drops tailored to your needs.
